Does freedom make us anxious?

If the French existentialists had been offered more options in those left-bank cafés, would they have had enough energy left to ponder our more essential freedoms? The modern world leaves us with so many relatively trivial choices to agonise over that we are kept distracted from the bigger ones. The new opiate of the people is having too many options to choose from.
